Bioinformatics Programmer

As part of the sports science and genetics team, you are expected to play a critical role in bringing science and technology together by

  • Participating in building state of art DNA analytics engine using different technologies such as python, R, big data systems and REST services.
  • Facilitating collaboration between geneticists and sports scientists through your deep knowledge of human genetics, public databases (ensembl, dbSNP, the 1000 Genomes Project, HapMap, etc.), GWAS and statistical analysis.
  • Analyzing loads of genetic data and create dazzling visualizations to help guide advances into new areas of research and inform new features to provide our users.
  • Engage in cutting edge research collaborations with outside partners and be involved in high impact scientific publications that expand our knowledge of genetics and sport performance.

Core Skills

  • Understanding of genetics, systems biology and personal genomics
  • Substantial knowledge of genomic data analysis tools and methods
  • Substantial knowledge of bioinformatics algorithms and databases
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and pattern recognition algorithms
  • Quick algorithm prototyping
  • Programming in shell, R, perl, Python
  • Linux type  OS administration skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD (Preferred) or MSc + 3 years work experience in Bioinformatics or a biological science with extensive and documented programming experience/knowledge
  • Some experience with relational databases and systems (MySQL)
  • An understanding of how genetics and biochemical processes influence physiology
  • Experience using version control systems for codebase maintenance
  • Experience running analyses in a linux environment
  • Team member with experience working on interdisciplinary projects
  • Clear thinker with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate intelligently and clearly
  • Familiarity with public resources and databases such as Ensembl, dbSNP, the 1000 Genomes Project, HapMap, etc
  • Experience with human genetics data, particularly SNP genotyping data
  • Familiarity with current bioinformatics tools and techniques, particularly for working with genotype or sequencing data.
  • Experience in programming and working with data from human genetics projects and are excited about using your knowledge to develop a product that provides value to people.

Strong Assets

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Knowledge of Java
  • Experience with web development technologies
  • Knowledge/experience with web scale ‘big data’ technologies such as: HBase, Hadoop, MapReduce, etc.
  • You have a strong interest in learning new skills, particularly from areas of emerging web technologies.
  • You have some experience working with interdisciplinary groups.
  • An understanding of how genetics and biochemical processes influence physiology and physical performance.
